The Paradox of Dying to Live

For the most part or technically for the whole part it can accurately be stated that the moment conception begins in the womb the process of life begins, regardless of what this world argues or the government wants to tell us. Life begins in the womb at that moment and the process which will form a baby boy or girl begins. This enigma of life is still a mystery even among some of the greatest scholars today. The formation of cells and membranes and nerves and then the ingredients found in just a small strand of DNA which begin to shape heart, lung, liver, kidneys and other organs.

And yet as I was contemplating this wonderful concept of life another concept which I consider quite the paradox began to formulate in my mind of how truly the moment that wonderful life begins the dark process of death begins also. Because of this very process much of mankind throughout history has been fascinated with or about death. Early cultures viewed death through great mysticism, some considering death, either early or late death, tragedy or age related as a curse of the gods whereas some just believed death to be the starting point into the realm of the region of the gods.

Superstitions throughout centuries have been propelled from the concept of death and the hooded and cloaked figure holding the scythe was the foreboding figure of Death himself coming to drag its helpless victims into the netherworlds of torment and horror.

The Canaanite myths picture death as a god who greedily and continually demands human flesh to devour. One text depicts death as having “a lip to the earth, a lip to the heavens … and a tongue to the stars”—Dictionary of Biblical Imagery

And so superstition upon superstition the vast majority of humanity at a very early age begins to fear that dreaded word…death.

And of rightfully so most do not wake up in the morning with the summation or countenance of longing for death and hoping that perhaps this will be the last day to walk on the earth.

Even king Hezekiah when sickness overtook him pleaded with the prophet to plead on his behalf to God to extend to him more years…his unspoken cry in the Bible…I do not want to die until finally God granted to him 15 more years to live.

Ecclesiastes 12:1-5 (KJV)
1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;
2 While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:
3 In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,
4 And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;
5 Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

And so in the face of death man has for the most part inspired a revolution to live! Folklore and literature is consumed with finding that fountain of youth…the tree of life…the fruit of Eden.

So naturally with mankind so consumed with living there is a concept in the Word of God that would do anything but appeal to the carnal and fleshly nature of man and that is to hear such words as:

John 12:24-25   24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.  25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Romans 6:3-4 (KJV)
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:

And yet a world so consumed with LIVING and LIFE will disregard the true appeal to LIFE and primarily I have begun to understand because there is an absolutely despised concept of ANYTHING having to die.

Yet we all know that death in and of itself originally was not the plan nor purpose of God in the confines of a perfect creation…Adam and Eve but the most well known story of creation places a man in a garden the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and evil.

Genesis 2:17   17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

And the serpent when talking to Eve lies on two accounts…not as many scholars will say that he was telling a half truth…but DEATH in the physical man would begin immediately or rather the process of death but most importantly…spiritual death would occur the very moment disobedience entered.

Romans 5:12-14  12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:  13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Romans 5:17  by one man’s offence death reigned by one;

Romans 5:21  That as sin hath reigned (exercised kingly power) unto (by) death,

So when the Apostle Paul made the declaration that…

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death;

Technically there are two deaths spoken of here, one the physical action of dying based upon the original sin of Adam and yet the ultimate and absolute form of death which is eternal, speaking of damnation and rejection from God.

Hebrews 10:30-31   30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.  31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

SIN SHALL CLAIM ITS REWARD…or RATHER ITS WAGE! We live in a world and society so inspired to LIVE yet are the walking DEAD!

Unless something occurs within me, to me…supernatural…I AM DEAD!

Ephesians 2:1-And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;  2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

I must understand in the all the concepts of the Bible LIFE is the FOCUS and yet to obtain LIFE I MUST DIE!

1 John 2:16-17  16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth (dwells…lives…resides) for ever.

There is no shadow of a doubt at the gist of the message portrayed here in 1 John that the world is comprised, in a spiritual sense, of the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. None of these things are of God but rather connected primarily to the world. The world is this physical realm that we live in yet comprised also of the fallen angels (demons,) that wander throughout this world doing their best to sway and corrupt with the ultimate desire to kill, steal and destroy.

Notice that the world and the lusts that have been thus far discussed will pass away but he that does the will of God abideth (dwells,) forever. It is interesting that as I read this doing the will of God seems to have a great connection with the Word of God.

Luke 21:33-36  33 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.  35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.  36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

I will submit that the Word of God and the Will of God are both interchangeable and you cannot have one without the other. If I am not careful Luke is telling me the cares of the world (lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life,) could come upon us like a snare and before we know it be caught in the midst of our sin and our moment of worldly pleasure.

Psalm 119:11   11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

And so it is that the Psalmist understood that the Word of God would help commit him to the Will of God. The will of God is that “none should perish,” and the will of God is comprised of a lifestyle that is free from sin and victorious through the Spirit of God. For me to LIVE I must walk in the Spirit. That is the only way that I can live.

Yet for me to LIVE I must DIE, not literally, yet in a spiritual principle. What that scripture is stating is that unless a kernel of wheat fall into the ground in the process of death it will never produce anything of itself yet if it can die and start the process that was ordained of God then it will be very fruitful. If I LOVE living then I need to die because if I hate LIVING in this world I will have a mindset to LIVE yet in an ETERANAL mindset.

Galatians 2:20   20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

1 Corinthians 15:31   31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

And along the same like of John 12 in which Jesus declared that death was necessary for spiritual growth Paul himself affirms this! A man that in the same portion of scripture declared that he “died daily.”
