1 Corinthians 15:34-36  Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.  35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?  36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:

There is no life that will emerge unless it die. I know that the Bible many times specializes in paradoxes and seemingly things that defy the very nature of common sense but we must understand that we are not dwelling in the dimension of “common sense,” if we follow the words of God. God is beyond “COMMON,” sense and is in a dimension of SUPERNATUAL sense, a Holy sense and something that our finite minds will never truly grasp or wrap itself around.

So we have in the word of God this constant call to DEATH and also the constant call to LIFE either through quickening, renewing or any other synonym or word that connects with life.

Romans 7:23-24  But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.  24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

And so we must understand that we are trapped in this body of death and until we physically and literally die we will always be strapped to the MIND of this body of death and the pleasures and desires and the urges of this body of death will always plague humanity.

Who then shall deliver me from this body of death then?

I am reminded in the types that are cast in the Old Testament as Jacob saw the approach of Esau. We can take time to establish but for the sake of time we need to understand that Esau as the firstborn represents the flesh and the nature of sin whereas Jacob represented as the second-born the nature of the Spirit and the desires of the Spirit.

Genesis 32:11   11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him,

We are of the SAME family…born as TWINS…yet Jacob the second-born of promise (typed as the Spirit,) feared the hand (power) of Esau. Does that word fear literally mean to shake or tremble with terror? In once sense I believe that we should SHAKE and TREMBLE but also I believe that in light of spiritual application the SPIRIT respects the POWER of the Flesh thus the lusting of the flesh against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. The moment I do not respect the power of the flesh is the moment I fall!

I pity the poor soul that does not fear the POWER OF THE FLESH!

Philippians 2:12   12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

How then do I get to the place in which I overcome or control the urges or the desires of the flesh? How do I reach a point to where the flesh does not have the POWER over me that it desires to have? If there is indeed a war in my members between two natures or the firstborn and the second-born how do I allow the second born to overcome the power of the firstborn?

For the sake of covering all possible ground the number one primary thing is that I must have that second-born nature!

John 3:3-7   3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.  4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?  5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.  6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.  7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

There is the FLESHBORN  (firstborn) and the SPIRIT BORN (second born.)

1 Peter 1:23   23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The nature of the second-born is INCORRUPTIBLE whereas we know the nature of the first-born is corruptible. If the incorruptible second-born (by the word of God,) lives and dwells forever then the corruptible (first-born) is in the perpetual state of death or dwells in death.

Genesis 3:15   15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;

The very war or battle between both in the incorruptible seed and the corruptible seed is thus typed in 1 Peter and connected to Genesis 3:15.

The inheritance of the corruptible seed is corruptible and decaying whereas the inheritance of the incorruptible is just as stated, incorruptible. The inheritance of the firstborn of the flesh is temporary whereas the inheritance of the second-born is eternal.

1 Peter 1:4   4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

And so I must in order to have such inheritance must be BORN AGAIN and become or have the nature of the second-born of promise. Ishmael and Isaac are very important in this scenario.

For 14 years Ishmael as the firstborn lived with Abraham yet we know that he was the offspring of the flesh and the impatience and lack of faith that flesh exhibits. Around 14 years old Isaac is born and God had declared something very important after stating that Ishmael the firstborn would continue to dwell in the presence of the second-born.

Genesis 17:21   But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

My covenant (promise, pledge or alignment,) will be made with the second-born of promise. Inheritance will pass onto the second-born.

Genesis 21:9-10 (KJV)
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.

And so the vivid portrayal of the enmity of seeds is presented here!

Galatians 4:29 (KJV)
29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Galatians 4:30-31 (KJV)
30 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

Any yet in the casting out we must remember that it doesn’t mean it is removed!

Genesis 16:11-12  And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.  12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

Nevertheless we are children of promise if we are born again and become the second-born of the Spirit and thus having the inheritance!

Galatians 4:28 (KJV)
28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

Ephesians 1:13-14   In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,  14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:22   22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

The idea or concept of being born again is very interesting because you could translate the word “again,” in the Greek to also mean “from above!”

Acts 2:2-4   2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The sound “from heaven,” which is above that is as of a rushing mighty wind…the breath of God breathing upon them and it tells us that it say upon each of them. The concept of “sat upon,” is to settle down and signifies a directional operation. It settled down from above! God breathed from above directionally down!

Genesis 2:7   7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Just as in the book of Genesis in the creation account which tells us of the GENESIS of the LIFE OF MAN so also we find in the book of Acts the REBIRTH or the Second Genesis of man to live again!

Genesis 2:17   17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

So why then did the Acts account in the New Testament have to happen? They had to LIVE AGAIN!

Ephesians 2:1  And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

And so if I then am quickened by the Spirit of God which can only occur through the infilling of the Holy Ghost with the INITIAL evidence of speaking in tongues I then through the birth of the second nature of the Spirit can effectively war against the nature of the firstborn and overcome it!

We have already seen that the firstborn despises and mocks and ridicules the second-born and will be in a constant war but the second-born along with inheritance is also given the power of the family of promise and has the strength of the family seal.

Luke 15:22   22 But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet:

With the concept presented of the prodigal son the implication of the ring was that the younger (second-born,) take it or leave it, was given the ring which had the family crest upon it that when letters were sent out they would use that ring to impress upon wax or some type of bonding solution that let whoever the recipient the mark of authority and whose family the letter had been sent from.

2 Corinthians 3:3   3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

We are living LETTERS bearing the SEAL of the house which we identify with! That is why we are joint-heirs! We carry the authority of the seal of promise!

2 Timothy 2:19   19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.

And so God made it so that when He knows those that are His having been SEALED or having received the SEAL…

2 Corinthians 1:22   22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

Ephesians 1:13  ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

The definition of SEALED: Generally, to set a seal or mark upon a thing as a token of its authenticity or approvedness—Complete Word Study Dictionary, The”

Acts 1:8  8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you

What is the definition of power? “inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or thing exerts and puts forth”: —Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon

Titus 2:14-15  Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.  15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

In other words based upon the definition of the power that I have I exert or put forth the quality or characteristic power of the Spirit that dwells within me which should be an obvious seal or a token of authenticity to those that I come across.

All of this ultimately to achieve the purpose primarily of one thing and that is to successfully defeat and overcome the nature of the firstborn that would love nothing more than to have dominion over the nature of the second-born.

Romans 8:10-15  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.  11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.  12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.  13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.  14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.  15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

The spirit is life and the body is death and yet with the Spirit of life it makes the body dead. What I like is that basically what is being stated initially in this scripture is that the resurrection Spirit dwells in us. No longer do I owe any debt which I cannot pay in the flesh because I no longer have to solely dwell in the flesh.

The principle that I believe is something which would completely change our lives if we could grasp is in the next portion that states that if we “through the Spirit,” mortify the deeds of the flesh we shall live.

Just because we received the second-born nature of the Spirit after He breathed into us life and we were quickened again does not mean that we become free from the nature of the firstborn. Remember the firstborn in the case of Ishmael “dwelt in the presence of his brethren,” which we know was talking about the second-born of promise, Isaac.

So how then do we mortify, “passive with the dative of the thing, “by death to be liberated from the bond of” anything (literally, “to be made dead” in relation “to”; —Thayer’s Greek-English Lexicon.”

The antithesis to death would be the life that we need to live in the Spirit of God. All of this is based upon what the Apostle Paul stated ,as I beforehand mentioned, that he “died daily.” We must note that first of all it was a daily process and thus for it to be daily would mean that it involved walking throughout this life with the purpose of mortifying the deeds of the flesh through the Spirit.

John Owen, the renowned Puritan preacher and writer made the statement that reverberates through my mind today: “Let us be killing sin or sin will be killing you!” How true that statement is!
