light spectrumWhen Adam and Eve disobeyed God and the serpent had declared they they surely would not die there was in that a partial truth. There were two deaths which had occurred. One was instant and the other had begun. One was spiritual and the other was physical. Instantly in a moment of time mankind who had been created in the image and likeness of God was separated from God because they had lost that LIKENESS! In one instant of time mankind ceased to MANIFEST and REFLECT the Spirit of God.

What was God then and how best can we describe Him? One way which possibly gives a great source of understanding would be to take the parallel accounts of Genesis chapter 1 and connect it to John chapter 1.

John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 The same was in the beginning with God.  3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

The Greek translation of “Word” is “Logos” which literally means a “thought, concept or idea.” In other words if we were to take that literal understanding and apply it to the scripture we would come up with: “In the beginning was the “thought, concept or idea” of God, and the “thought, concept or idea” was in the mind of God and the “thought, concept or idea” was God.

The only way a thought can ever impact beyond the mind is if the mouth forms what we call speech. I can be thinking a thought at this very moment that will never impact your world unless I open my mouth and give utterance to the thought. What then was the “thought, concept or idea” of God?

John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  2 The same was in the beginning with God.  3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Here we are suddenly catapulted into the first recorded utterance of the Bible in which God revealed what the THOUGHT was! My question to those of you that are reading this would be: “If it wasn’t until the fourth day in which the sun, moon and stars were set in the heavens, what then was the Light of the first day?” I will submit that the Light of the first day was the “thought, concept or idea” of WHO and WHAT God is!

1 John 1:5   5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

When God looked into a world which was empty and void and covered in darkness the best way in which to completely change the total nature of the earth was to introduce HIMSELF into the world! (I could preach right now!)  The moment God opened His anthropomorphic mouth and spoke “let there be Light,” literally it was the equivalence of stating “Let there be ME!”

That is why in the same parallel account dealing with “IN THE BEGINNING,” we find the gospel writer John elaborate with greater detail upon this momentous occasion.

John 1:4-9  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.  5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.   6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.  8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

John declared that he was sent to be a witness of THE LIGHT (what light?) The light that was from the beginning! The light of the first day! John wasn’t THE LIGHT but a witness of THE LIGHT which it goes on to say was the TRUE LIGHT! In everything stated thus far we find the exact parallels of the creation account in which Light penetrated a void and empty world covered in darkness and the darkness which retreated and was separated from THE LIGHT (because there is no darkness nor shadow of turning in Him.)

Then John makes a profound statement:

John 1:14   14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Suddenly he is back to the concept of the Word (logos) the thought, concept or idea which we have established as being Light. When John makes this declaration that the “word was made flesh” we are suddenly confronted with something God blew my mind with in prayer when He whispered in my ear “Light was veiled in the flesh!”

Look throughout all the occurrences of the Old Testament every time that God appeared before man and you will find that each time God veiled Himself in something.

Psalm 18:11-13 (KJV)
11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.
13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

2 Chronicles 6:1 (KJV)
1 Then said Solomon, The LORD hath said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

2 Samuel 22:12-13 (KJV)
12 And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies.
13 Through the brightness before him were coals of fire kindled.

Deuteronomy 5:22 (KJV)
22 These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.

In fact one of the most profound moments of the Old Testament in which God revealed Himself in part was with Moses on the mountain. Moses desired to see the glory of God and upon the request God granted this to him yet it came with the condition of hiding in the cleft of a rock and still God was veiled behind a cloud. What happens after Moses had seen a glimpse of the passing of God? He comes down from the mountain externally manifesting the glory of God. His face SHINED brighter than the natural light around him so much so than those who saw his face could not stand to behold the Light! Their request was that the LIGHT BE VEILED! They wanted God to stay behind the VEIL!

Tie this now to Johns verse which states that the WORD BECAME FLESH and we establish that the WORD is LIGHT and we realize LIGHT WAS VEILED IN THE FLESH. Does not Hebrews declare that the VEIL was the FLESH OF GOD?

Hebrews 10:20   20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh…

Then we are suddenly catapulted into a parenthetical phrase.

John 1:14  (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)

They VERY THING that Moses desired to see of God was suddenly placed in front of ALL MEN and yet the sad thing was that the children of Israel had desired so much to remain apart from God and at a distance that their heart was still veiled (connected to what happened with Moses and the Light shining on his face.)

In other words John declared that when the Word-Light was veiled in the flesh WE for the first time as a people BEHELD the GLORY of God.) The word “glory” in the Greek is “doxa,” and comes from a root work “doxeo” which literally means “to think!” In other words it is declared that when we saw Jesus we were seeing the EXPRESSION OF THE THOUGHT WHICH WAS FROM THE BEGINNING! What was that? LIGHT!

John 8:12 (KJV)
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

John 12:46 (KJV)
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.

John 12:35-36 (KJV)
35 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.
36 While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.

Immediately following the Messianic chapter of Isaiah 59 we find a beautiful scripture identifying this Messiah whom we know as Jesus as LIGHT!

Isaiah 60:1-3 (KJV)
1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.
2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Look now at Isaiah 42:5-8.

Isaiah 42:5-8 (KJV)
5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Isaiah declares that God would NEVER give His glory to another neither praise to any graven IMAGE and yet we see that Jesus thought it not robbery to be EQUAL WITH GOD! Suddenly we realize and understand why in Philippians 2:5-6 that it was NOT considered robbery that Jesus who being in the FORM of GOD could be EQUAL with God. Because the WORD (LIGHT) was manifest in the flesh. It was GOD IN FLESH! When we saw Jesus we saw God (Philip when you’ve seen Me you have seen the Father!)

Nobody could share the GLORY of God BUT GOD nor any praise given to graven images! Oh but look at Hebrews!

Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)
3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Jesus was the BRIGHTNESS OF HIS GLORY and the EXPRESS IMAGE (Not a graven image.) Literally when we read that scripture we find that Jesus was the very SHINING FORTH OF THE GLORY (DOXA-DOXEO-EXPRESSION OF THE THOUGHT) which was from the beginning! The word “express image” used only here in the Bible literally means the “EXACT EXPRESSION!”

Ezekiel 43:2 (KJV)
2 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.
